National D-Day Memorial is poised to pay homage once more

NationalDDayMemorial

As the sun sets and casts a deepening twilight over the Blue Ridge Mountains, the National D-Day Memorial is poised to pay homage once more to the 4,415 men lost on D-Day during Flames of Memory 2023. This poignant event is scheduled nightly on December 1, 2, & 3, spanning from 5 PM to 9 PM.

Throughout the Memorial’s sprawling grounds, thousands of luminarias will illuminate, serving as a solemn tribute to the fallen heroes of Overlord and symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice made by each individual to reignite the lamp of freedom. Visitors are encouraged to park and stroll through the radiant Memorial or opt for a drive around the circle to witness the luminous display from the comfort of their vehicles.

On both Friday and Saturday evenings, attendees will have the unique opportunity to step back in time and experience Christmas 1944 on the frontlines with Christmas in Wartime. This distinctive presentation brings history to life through re-enactors and living history displays, offering a glimpse into how soldiers celebrated the holidays amidst the challenges of World War II. A special highlight is the annual appearance of G.I. Santa on Saturday.

Entrance to the event is free of charge, and donations are warmly welcomed. Flames of Memory 2023 extends its gratitude to generous sponsors, including BWX Technologies, Inc., Steel Dynamics, Framatome, the Bedford Area Welcome Center & Department of Tourism, and the Town of Bedford, Virginia. Join us in honoring and remembering the sacrifices of those who paved the way for freedom.
