The controversy surfaced after influencer Maitian Nongfu shared a video on Bilibili, China’s leading video platform. The video, which compared 12 songs recorded by a fan during the band’s Shanghai concerts using music analysis software, alleged that Ashin, the lead singer, lip-synced at least five songs during the three-hour performance, as reported by Global Times

On Sunday, Beijing’s cultural law enforcement confirmed the investigation, stating that they would “make a judgment according to the situation they recorded.”

The news quickly gained traction on mainland social media, amassing over 240 million views within a day. Many attendees expressed their disappointment with Mayday, given their status as one of the best-selling rock bands in Taiwan and China.

As the allegations circulated, Mayday has yet to issue a public response, leaving fans divided on the matter.

One fan, using the handle Cappuccino on Bilibili, remarked, “If that is true, I’d be really disappointed. The lyrics and music style of Mayday are quite unique and they really helped me get through the dark days.”

Meanwhile, another fan named Qicha, who recently attended the band’s Shenyang tour on July 15, expressed sympathy for the band’s “occasional fake singing situation.” She highlighted the current landscape of live performances, stating, “Nowadays there are only a few divas who can do their full live singing, while some will do live singing with back vocals.”

The 27-year-old Beijing-based tech firm employee emphasized Mayday’s creative and talent strengths as excellent songwriters. For her, enjoying the concert’s atmosphere and supporting the band took precedence over the recent controversy.

As the investigation unfolds, Mayday’s fans anxiously await the band’s official response to address the allegations and provide clarity on the situation.
