God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok is set to receive an exciting new DLC, titled Valhalla, and the best part is, it comes free of charge.

Scheduled for release on December 12th, Valhalla introduces a captivating roguelike mode available to players on both PS4 and PS5.

Unveiled during The Game Awards live showcase, the Valhalla DLC brings Kratos back into action, offering a substantial combat experience with horde modes, challenging boss fights, and more. Players can dive into the DLC at their convenience, although Sony Santa Monica, the developer, recommends completing the main campaign first.

The official description from PlayStation sets the stage for a profound journey, stating, “Embark with Kratos to Valhalla on a deeply personal and reflective journey towards a future he never thought possible.” The adventure promises a blend of the familiar combat from God of War Ragnarok with fresh elements inspired by the roguelite genre, hinting at the inclusion of puzzles alongside intense battles.

In a blog post, Grace Orlady, the lead community manager, disclosed that Valhalla serves as an “epilogue” following the decisive battle against Odin and Atreus’ departure. The absence of Atreus in the trailer aligns with this narrative choice. As a tantalizing tidbit for longtime God of War enthusiasts, the post hints at Kratos’ journey to Valhalla accompanied only by Mimir, delving into unknown depths to confront inner trials and echoes of his past.

Progressing through Valhalla unlocks run-specific and permanent upgrades, adding a roguelike twist by requiring players to restart from scratch after each death, sans armor. Weapons and maxed-out skill trees remain intact, but glyphs, perks, runic attacks, and other upgrades are temporary, discovered through roguelike trials. Difficulty levels can be chosen from five options, with “Show Me Mastery” representing the pinnacle challenge.

The trend of prominent PlayStation franchises embracing roguelike elements continues, with Naughty Dog recently revealing a roguelike mode for The Last of Us 2 Remastered. This innovative approach adds an “arcade” twist to the survival shooter’s world, showcasing the industry’s evolving interest in this captivating genre.
