From Suspension to Stardom: Martavis Bryant’s Second Chance

The NFL’s official reinstatement of wide receiver Martavis Bryant over the weekend has swiftly led to a fresh opportunity in his career.Bryant is set to join the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad after successfully working out with the team this week, as reported by sources like The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Cowboys beat writer Michael Gehlken.

Bryant’s last NFL appearance dates back to the 2018 season when he was a part of the Oakland Raiders. An indefinite suspension was handed to him due to violations of the league’s drug testing policy, and he had previously missed the entire 2016 season due to suspension as well.

In his pre-suspension days, Bryant showcased immense promise with the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning recognition as an electrifying talent and one of the league’s top big-play receivers. His unique blend of size and pure speed made him a standout figure, accumulating 145 receptions for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns over parts of four seasons.

However, it’s important to note that Bryant will not only turn 32 later this season but has been away from the NFL for five years. Such a prolonged absence and the transition into his 30s will undoubtedly present challenges in his comeback. While his body might benefit from reduced wear and tear during his time away, adapting to the NFL pace and demands won’t be a walk in the park.

The Cowboys, boasting one of the NFL’s top offenses this season with an average of over 27 points per game, could certainly use an extra boost at the wide receiver position. While CeeDee Lamb has been impressive, the team has faced inconsistency from the likes of Michael Gallup, Brandin Cooks, and Jalen Tolbert.

Should Bryant manage to regain a spot on the active roster and make a significant impact, it would represent a substantial addition to the Cowboys’ already potent offensive lineup.
